In Prince William County, care assessment and Medicaid financial eligibility involve different steps. Knowing which office handles each can make the first conversation more useful.

The county’s financial-assistance guide describes an LTSS screening completed by a Department of Social Services staff member and a Prince William Health District nurse. Screening requests go to 703-792-5880.
The same guide lists separate Medicaid financial-eligibility contacts for Prince William County, the City of Manassas and the City of Manassas Park. Use the office for the person’s actual jurisdiction; the cities are not interchangeable with county benefits intake.
For a child with developmental support needs.
Prince William Community Services’ DD staff can conduct waiver assessments. The county’s youth DD page lists 703-792-7800 or 703-792-4900, TTY 711, for intake information.
The page explains that much case management for children 18 and under occurs through their school system, while Community Services DD staff remain available for waiver assessment. School support and Medicaid service authorization are different; families may need to work with both teams.

Already caring for a family member?
Virginia Medicaid may allow an eligible family member to provide authorized personal care as a paid caregiver. For the parent or guardian of a minor, the LRI rules focus on extraordinary hands-on ADL needs beyond what is typically expected for a child of the same age. A diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility.
A qualifying paid LRI may receive up to 40 reimbursable hours per week for a child, subject to assessment, the care plan, authorization and applicable program rules. General supervision and ordinary parenting alone do not qualify. Ask how the LRI respite restriction affects any existing care arrangement.
Questions families ask.
Are an LTSS screening and a Medicaid application the same thing?
No. The screening assesses long-term care needs, while the Medicaid application determines financial and coverage eligibility. Prince William County’s guide explains both and lists the relevant contacts. A favorable assessment does not replace the other program requirements.
Does my child’s school plan authorize a paid parent caregiver?
No. School services and a Medicaid personal-care authorization are separate. Prince William Community Services DD staff can discuss waiver assessment, and the applicable Medicaid process must evaluate extraordinary ADL care and caregiver requirements.
What if the person lives in Manassas or Manassas Park?
The county’s official guide lists separate financial-eligibility offices for the two cities. Confirm the person’s jurisdiction when requesting public benefits. This First Choice guide describes Prince William County; ask the team directly about current service availability for any other location.
